Sou Tyas

It was with great sadness we learned of the death of Sou Tyas a long standing friend and supporter of Chilton Foliat.

Sou was a highly talented artist and although she used many different mediums she was best known for her incredible coloured pencil work that many people confused with water coloured pieces. Sou's work was on display at many of the Art Ex events in the village hall and in July 2008 staged her own event that was both well supported and well received. Sou was also a keen and accomplished dress designer and she had a particular passion for period costumes, some of which she replicated to perfection having first researched the item in detail; she was often critical of BBC programs that did not portray the correct costume for the period they were showing!

When Chilton Players staged their first pantomime, Cinderella, in the village hall, it was Sou that designed and hand made all the costumes prompting a comment in John-Cameron-Hayes column for the Adviser, "......costumes that would not be out of place on a West End stage". Following that production she continued to make and re-model the costumes for a further two productions as well as taking part herself showing yet another talent on stage.

Sou was a much loved mother, sister and grandmother and my very dear and longstanding friend of nearly 50 years.

Farewell my Lady 'T' and God Bless you.

The funeral is at 11.30am tomorrow (11th December) at All Saints Church, Durrington, Salisbury SP4 8AZ

Sunday Roasts at The Wheatsheaf

We all love roasts...we love knowing that a beautiful joint of meat is slowly cooking in the oven, potatoes in the same tray, whilst we go for a good walk. When someone else is cooking for you, it is a truly special meal...

The Pub use Nesbitts Farm for their pedigree organic Beef... it has the best flavour and it's only 5 miles from us! For larger groups, The Wheatsheaf's private dining room can seat up to 14 people with an intimate atmosphere.

They promise no waste, no microwave vegetables, no Bisto granules, no mediocrity... everything is homemade and cooked just how "it used to be".

Update Regarding Treework in Fairyland

The tree felling contractors for Eastridge Estate report that work in Fairyland is progressing well, although they have had a few issues with the bogginess of the ground in a couple of places following the weekend rain. Currently the footpath is closed and the temporary closure to allow the felling works has been extended for a couple of days, hopefully normal and safe access along the Public Right of Way will be returned shortly.

Fairyland

I have had a letter from The Eastridge Estate concerning Fairyland.

Unfortunately they have discovered that many of the ash trees are infected by the Chalara fungus which they describe as a virulent pathogen which is attacking native ash trees. The Forestry Commission has information about this disease which can be found here. Unfortunately it is nearly always fatal and the Estate feel that there is no alternative but to remove the affected trees. This work will commence in around 4 to 6 weeks time and is expected to last for about 3 weeks. Unfortunately there may be some noise and traffic disruption during the work but I am assured that they will try to keep it to a minimum.

At present I do not know if the footpath will be closed at any time. I have contacted the estate and await their reply. I have also asked if they intend to carry out any replanting.

Davies boys Double Achievements on same day

2 local brothers have had great higher education results within 24 hours of each other,

Oscar Davies (24), has been called to the Bar in the Inner Temple at the end of July, on his journey to becoming a barrister.

Felix Davies (21), has learnt that he's got his BSc degree in economics. His graduation ceremony will be in Swansea.

Oscar and Felix grew up in Hungerford and Chilton Foliat. They both went to Ramsbury Primary School, then both won scholarships to Christ’s Hospital in Horsham, which has centuries-old connections with Newbury.

Their parents, Nick Davies (Chilton Foliat and soon Marlborough) and Alice King (Marlborough) are very proud of both of their sons.

A great big THANK YOU to the villagers who braved the heat and pollution to re-paint the bridge railings. Don't they look smart!

Press Cuttings section on the Chilton Foliat website

On the 'In the Press' page you will now find cuttings from the National and Local press relating to the village, going back to 1875. It contains a lot of images, so it takes a little while to load.

Take a look at The Times article dated 30th October 1937 explaining proposals to submerge Littlecote and Ramsbury in a giant reservoir!
